VGC19 Sun Series – Solgaleo

Solgaleo, the face of Pokémon Sun and a new monster that has been introduced to the 2019 VGC scene. At first glance, there are a lot of Pokémon that threaten Solgaleo so it may not look as appealing as some other other restricted Pokémon to choose from. But with a base 137 attack stat and the Full Metal Body ability, which prevents stat drops, Solgaleo becomes a hyper offensive nightmare matchup for most players to try and deal with. With the typing of steel and psychic and the Full Metal Body ability Solgaleo looks like it’s just a Metagross on steroids!

Solgaleo has no problems picking up a knock out on Pokémon like Xerneas, Incineroar, and Amoongus! Part of what makes Solgaleo so frustrating to play against is guessing which one of the strong coverage moves it would be running such as Sunsteel Strike, Zen Headbutt, Flare Blitz, Superpower, Wild Charge, Earthquake or Knock Off. With defensive base stats such as a 137 hp, 107 defense and 89 sp.def, Solgaleo can also support a team. With moves like Trick Room, Nobel Roar, Thunder Wave and Roar, there is always the option to go for a slower bulky support style Solgaleo. Solgaleo is a hyper offensive players dream and will be scooping CP throughout the 2019 season!

Common Partners

: It’s no secret that Incineroar is arguably the best support Pokémon that VGC has ever seen. With Intimidate and Fake Out it allows Solgaleo to be able to live hits from threatening psychical attackers as well as set up if it needs to.

: Depending on how your team is set up, Solgaleo can honestly be next to all 4 Tapus and see success! From the massive damage output that comes from being next to Lele and Koko, to the support and sustainability that Bulu and Fini offer. Maintaining control of terrain and having those options for damage or support are very important factors in letting Solgaleo reach its full potential.

: Yveltal is very nice with helping to kill ghost types that are a danger to Solgaleo. Along with killing ghosts, Yveltal can use moves like snarl that limit damage taken by Solgaleo. Yveltal is also a flying type which means while going up against Pokémon like Groudon, there has to be a decision made on who to target.

: Kyogre is a great Pokémon to pair with Solgaleo. With a massive Sp.atk stat and the drizzle ability it protects Solgaleo by weakening fire type moves.

Common Threats

: With dual super effective stab moves Incineroar offers the ability to deal massive damage to Solgaleo in two different ways. This becomes even more threatening if by chance you find yourself in a Trick Room situation.

: A dark aura boosted Foul Play, Knock Off or Dark Pulse from Yveltal more times than not ends up in a dead Solgaleo. If you’re playing against an opposing Yveltal you must play carefully and position yourself to try and take less damage.

: Lunala is a very threatening Pokémon to Solgaleo, with its Shadow Shield ability reducing damage by 50% when it’s at full HP and OHKO power from a devastatingly strong Moongeist Beam. Lunala is a Pokémon you have to deal with and take care of, if you want Solgaleo to stay alive!
