VGC 17 Sample Moveset & EV Spread Compendium

*Disclaimer*

The optimal EV spread for a given Pokémon often depends on the roles a given team requires it to perform, so we encourage you to use these sets as guides or starting points for making your very own team. This list is far from comprehensive, so don’t let it stifle your own creativity!

Also, though a number of these sets list Hidden Power in the moveset, the appropriate IVs for these Hidden Powers are not listed, as it affects the appropriate EVs. With the advent of Hyper Training in Sun & Moon, it is possible to emulate maximum IVs without altering the IVs themselves, and it is therefore possible to essentially have 31 IVs in all stats without affecting the Hidden Power.

This document will be updated as the metagame progresses, so it will stay relevant throughout the entire season.

I’m loving the content this is actually just what I’ve been looking for!

I want to submit my own Pelipper-spread since the one listed here seems kind of random.

    Pelipper @ Waterium Z
    Ability: Drizzle
    Level: 50
    EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 52 SpA / 76 SpD / 124 Spe
    Calm Nature
    IVs: 0 Atk
    – Hydro Pump
    – Ice Beam
    – Tailwind
    – Protect

    Damage Calcs:

    Offensive:

    52 SpA Pelipper Ice Beam vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Garchomp: 156-188 (85.2 – 102.7%) — 18.8% chance to OHKO

    52 SpA Pelipper Hydro Vortex (185 BP) vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Tapu Koko in Rain: 202-238 (138.3 – 163%) — guaranteed OHKO

    Defensive:

    252+ SpA Tapu Lele Psychic vs. 252 HP / 76+ SpD Pelipper in Psychic Terrain: 141-166 (84.4 – 99.4%) — guaranteed 2HKO

    252 Atk Garchomp Rock Slide vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Pelipper: 64-76 (38.3 – 45.5%) — guaranteed 3HKO

Hydro Pump is chosen for good damage Hydro Vortex but if you don´t want to have a Z-Crystal on Pelipper Scald might be smarter because missing sucks (the Z-Move always hits). The EV´s are just enuogh to always survive +252 SpA Tapu Lele Psychic, just enough to outspeed max speed Tapu Koko under tailwind and the rest into SpA and 4 into Def. The idea is to get up Tailwind, fire off one big Attack with Hydro Vortex and then die for a sweeper to come in and take advantage of the rain like Tapu Koko, or Xurkitree with Thunder or Swift Swim users.

    • Bob

Always go Focus Sash on Pelipper and Glass Cannon EVs. Defensive EVs is just a waste on him, the max they will buy you is one more turn to be alive, but you will be doing crap damage. Pelipper’s job is to set up Rain and Tailwind, that’s why you go Focus Sash, in case something outspeeds you, you won’t die before Tailwinding. After you set those up you just look to do as much damage as possible till you die, this way you are gonna be more useful than surviving one more turn doing less damage, thus why the offensive IVs. Scald over Hydro Pump for accuracy since no Z-Crystal… Hydro Pump is not worth the risk, even if you miss once you are screwed. Hurricane for STAB over Ice Beam… Even a not super effective STAB Hurricane will help you a lot more times than the niche Ice Beam will do. Plus you can find Ice coverage for your team pretty easy anyway from another Pokemon.

      • Bob

Plus that Hurricane always hits during Rain. Forgot to mention that. So I don’t see any reason why you would run Ice Beam on Pelipper over a 100% accurate 110 BP STAB Move.

    • elderwar

yaaaa .. you can achieve all thesame offensive calcs dropping the z move and maxing spat. Also you rose your defenses to make hits 2hkos when focus sash does the same thing.

  • Yuei

The speed evs also outspeed defensive celesteela and be able to 1v1 it with flamethrower.

  • Bad Dawg

The Snorlax set posted seems kind of random since Pulverizing Pancake is really not viably because it wastes a move slot with Giga Impact. Snorlax is usually used with Belly Drum+Wiki Berry+Gluttony, which hits harder than Pancake Snorlax. I personally am not very familiar with this Pokemon, so if somebody could create a new set for it that woula be great 🙂🙂

    • Jiwa

You’re right, Belly Drum is the most viable Snorlax set at the moment. I’ve added a Belly Drum set now, thanks for letting us know that we were missing one.

  • Zivhayr

I don’t quite understand the Exeggutor EV distribution. You say 4 EVs are wasted by this distribution, so why not put them into Special attack, or one of the defenses?

    • Jiwa

In theory we waste 4 EVs, because investing the final 4 in SpAtk or one of the defences won’t increase those stats, and neither attack nor speed requires investment. However, if we were to take the 4 out of SpAtk and invest the remaining 8 in HP or one of the defences so that we use all 508 EVs, we end up with the same number of stats overall.

      • Zivhayr

Ah ok, I should’ve run the stat calcs myself to figure that out, cheers for the reply.

  • Can you do more sets for vgc 2017, but with adamant and modest nature, for tapu/ultrabeast pokemon. Or the pokemon are only viable for competitive with specific natures that are in this post?. I am new here.

How i need to think to create a good team for vgc?.

  • Marty

Wish you guys would update this a little bit, it’s a great starting point for noobs like me.

    • Jiwa

Thanks for the feedback, we do update this document regularly without announcing changes, it’ll remain up to date throughout the season.

  • Bad Dawg

The Ghost type Porygon-Z has its offensive calcs for Blizzard and Ice Beam, even though the set calls for neither of those moves. I am very thankful for this post, and I love this because it is great for new players to get a grasp on VGC as well as experienced players like me who are too lazy to make EV spreads for every Pokemon.

    • Jiwa

Thanks for picking up on that, and thanks for the kind words. The Ghost-type Z-Conversion Porygon-Z should be fixed now.

  • Usernametaken

An alternative to the primarina set posted above, since I didn’t like the defensive benchmarks

    Primarina
    Ability: Torrent
    Level: 50

    A slightly better scizor spread

    Scizor

    EVs: 252 HP / 236 Atk / 4 Def / 12 SpD / 4 Spe
    Adamant Nature

    *atk is a jump point

Also a bulky celesteela set I’ve been using. Beware the mirror matchup.

    Celesteela @Leftovers
    Ability: Beast Boost
    EVs: 244 HP / 4 Atk / 140 Def / 116 SpD / 4 Spe
    Careful Nature

*Hp is a five subs after lefties number

    *+1 252 Atk Gyarados Hydro Vortex (160 BP) vs. 244 HP / 140 Def Celesteela: 169-201 (83.2 – 99%) — guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

  • Beginner

Nature is missing from the first buzzwole set. Jolly or adamant?

    Great resource!

  • Tails

Hey guys, we really need a Z-NaturePower Whimsicott in here. Tailwind/Taunt/Encore (not necessarily all 3) support is pretty great, and a Z-Move that can change types alongside a x3 Tapu team can be pretty awesome. If it worries Cybertron every time he sees one, I’m pretty sure it deserves a mention in here.

Fairy and Grass type Z-NaturePower both get STAB & Terrain boost, making it pretty powerful, and Electric type Z-NP has a chance to OHKO Celesteela. And even regular NP can OHKO Gyarados. All the while being a priority offensive attack. Just watch out for Taunt & Lele.

    • Tails

      Here’s my suggested set:

      Whimsicott @ Normalium Z
      Ability: Prankster
      Level: 50
      EVs: 172 HP / 252 SpA / 84 SpD
      Modest Nature
      IVs: 0 Atk
      – Nature Power
      – Encore
      – Tailwind
      – Protect

      Offensive:

      252+ SpA Whimsicott Nature Power vs. 52 HP / 4 SpD Gyarados in Electric Terrain: 244-288 (137.8 – 162.7%) — guaranteed OHKO

      252+ SpA Whimsicott Bloom Doom (175 BP) vs. 52 HP / 4 SpD Gyarados in Grassy Terrain: 172-204 (97.1 – 115.2%) — 87.5% chance to OHKO

      252+ SpA Whimsicott Twinkle Tackle (175 BP) vs. 36 HP / 0 SpD Garchomp: 266-314 (141.4 – 167%) — guaranteed OHKO

      252+ SpA Whimsicott Bloom Doom (175 BP) vs. 36 HP / 0 SpD Garchomp in Grassy Terrain: 199-235 (105.8 – 125%) — guaranteed OHKO

      252+ SpA Whimsicott Twinkle Tackle (175 BP) vs. 28 HP / 52 SpD Assault Vest Garchomp: 168-198 (89.8 – 105.8%) — 31.3% chance to OHKO

      252+ SpA Whimsicott Nature Power vs. 4 HP / 4 SpD Salamence: 152-180 (88.8 – 105.2%) — 25% chance to OHKO

      252+ SpA Whimsicott Twinkle Tackle (175 BP) vs. 4 HP / 4 SpD Salamence: 276-326 (161.4 – 190.6%) — guaranteed OHKO

      252+ SpA Whimsicott Twinkle Tackle (175 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Kartana: 133-157 (99.2 – 117.1%) — 93.8% chance to OHKO

      252+ SpA Whimsicott Gigavolt Havoc (175 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Kartana in Electric Terrain: 133-157 (99.2 – 117.1%) — 93.8% chance to OHKO

      Notes:

Max SpAtk to maximize damage output, not calc’d for anything specific. Nature Power OHKOs Gyarados in Electric Terrain without the need for the Z-Move while Z-Nature Power is needed in Grassy Terrain but OHKOs only 7/8 times. Twinkle Tackle / Bloom Doom is needed to OHKO ScarfChomp, and Twinkle Tackle OHKOs AVChomp almost 1/3 times. Nature Power in Misty Terrain OHKOs Salamence 1/4 times without the need for the Z-Move. Gigavolt Havoc / Twinkle Tacklet OHKOs non Assault Vest Kartana 15/16 times.

HP & SpDef stats are to maximize bulk while putting Whimsicott’s SpDef 1 point above its Def so help prevent Porygon2 from getting a SpAtk boost with Download. Tailwind is there if speed control becomes necessary, and Encore to discourage opponents from Protecting, and punishing those who do.

  • Iron Fist Ledian

The Clefairy spreads don’t seem to match up with what comes out of the damage calculator. Could you confirm if they are correct or not?

    • Jiwa

I’ve double checked them and they do seem to be correct 🙂

  • Thecroaker

Where’s my alolan dugtrio spread >:V

  • Lily

No sets for Wigglytuff? I heard it was used somewhere abusing Competitive+Hyper Voice\Dazzling Gleam. I think that’s a pretty solid niche, as Milotic (the other Competitive User, no pun intended) has 0 spread moves and Intimidate being so common.

  • Bad Dawg ✝

missing a Scarf Kartana set. Just thought I’d post my personal set I like to use

    Kartana@Choice Scarf
    Ability: Beast Boost
    EVs: 84 HP / 196 Atk / 4 Def / 20 SpD / 204 Spe
    Adamant Nature
    -Leaf Blade
    -Smart Strike
    -Sacred Sword
    -Night Slash/Razor Leaf/Guillotine

Don’t have time to get calcs atm but it is EV’d to live P2’s Ice Beam and Jolly Garchomp’s Fire Fang and its speed investment allows it to outspeed Scarf Admant Garchomp by 1 point and Scarf Modest Lele.

    • Bad Dawg ✝

Porygon 2’s Ice Beam at +1 SpA, sorry

  • MedzR

The curselax set has 6ev’s spare.

    • Bad Dawg✝

That is because they will have no effect on any of its stats except for Special Attack and speed, which you do not want to invest into since Snorlax does not use them

  • Ok

The smeargle EV sets are inefficient unless you’re running transform. For example, 84HP/76Def/92SpD has more physical defense and special defense than what’s there right now.

  • Isal

Please add an AV Buzzwole set. Its not as uncommon~

    • Jiwa

      Added

  • Chimchar-Trainer

Why use encore on a choice scarf politoed? Isn’t it troublesome to be locked into a move that doesn’t do any damage?
